All of Jesus’ miracles defied science and human thoughts, and the miracle of walking on water cannot be excluded. That seems to be one of the most impossible things anyone could ever do. But He did. Now, a very interesting part of that story is that Jesus wasn’t the only one who walked on the sea.
While the disciples thought that He was a ghost, and Jesus already confirmed that it was Him, Peter asked Him to call him. Humanly speaking, that wasn’t a good idea. He wasn’t even sure who it was, for he said “Master, if it’s really you….” But there was something He was sure of. He was sure of the power that goes along with Jesus’ words that produces results. Peter seemed to be saying in his heart “I’m not so sure if it’s the Master, but once He tells me to come, I’ll come. His word is so powerful to get me out of this boat and unto the water”. Peter had seen Jesus do mighty things by just speaking the word. He had witnessed Him healing the lame and the dead by simply commanding them to rise up. In fact, he had encountered Jesus for the first time when He told him to launch his net in the deep and they had a great catch. He most certainly knew that Jesus never minces words when He speaks.
Having heard that word from the Master, Peter immediately jumped from the boat and started walking on the sea. It might look like a very short moment for some people, but nobody else was recorded in the bible to have walked on water apart from Jesus and Peter. Walking on water might imply doing the most difficult things in our lives. It also implies facing challenges that confront our faith, which our natural abilities are not able to resolve. We may have to walk on the sea when we’re faced with a great tempest and our boat is sinking, and there is no help anywhere. All we need is to have faith in God’s word. Just as Peter trusted the word Jesus would give Him, we must trust the word God has already given us. Even if the wind of life is so boisterous and there are storms all over, our faith in God’s word will help us walk on that sea of troubles and trials like kings.
The enemy will always strive to get us distracted and see the waves churning beneath our feet. But we must fix our gaze on Jesus, the One who has bid us to come. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. He knew who He was and knew that He cannot be drowned in the very water He created. We also must know who we are, that we cannot drown when the Lord Himself has given the word.
